Kampala South Substation Upgrade Completed, Minister Says It Will Boost Power Reliability
The completion of an upgrade at Kampala South Substation has increased its capacity from 20MW to 34MW, a move government says will improve electricity reliability along Entebbe Road and surrounding areas while supporting growing residential and commercial demand.

The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has completed an upgrade of the Kampala South Substation, increasing its capacity from 20MW to 34MW in a bid to strengthen grid reliability along Entebbe Road and neighbouring areas.

The upgrade, which involved the commissioning of a new 10/14MVA transformer, is part of a broader national grid optimisation programme aimed at improving electricity distribution across the country.

It is expected to enhance power supply to more than 108,000 households and about 650 commercial consumers.

Minister for Energy and Mineral Development Ruth Nankabirwa commended UEDCL for completing the works, saying the upgrade will significantly improve service delivery.

“The commissioning of a new 10/14MVA transformer at Kampala South Substation will significantly improve supply reliability, reducing outages and enhancing operational resilience within the distribution network,” Nankabirwa said.

She said the intervention aligns with UEDCL’s mandate to deliver stable and reliable power for Kampala and other parts of the country by 2026.

Other substations that have already undergone capacity enhancements under the programme include Kakiri, Kabale, Masaka, Kumi, and Mubende.

“The focus remains on delivering a stable, reliable power supply for Kampala and the country,” Nankabirwa said, pointing to government’s wider commitment to strengthening energy infrastructure.

UEDCL officials say the Kampala South upgrade is designed to position the network for future growth, ensuring it can meet rising demand while supporting economic activity in the areas served by the substation.

The company’s ongoing investments in grid upgrades are seen as critical to reducing outages, improving service reliability, and supporting Uganda’s broader economic development goals.
